Shopify fees explained (2026)

On Shopify your main per-sale cost is payment processing through Shopify Payments. The rate depends on your plan; there's no extra Shopify transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments. Your monthly subscription is separate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take per sale?

With Shopify Payments on the Basic plan, about 2.9% + $0.30 per order — lower on higher plans. Unlike a marketplace, there's no big commission; your other costs are product, shipping and any apps/ads.

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee?

Only if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments — then Shopify adds 0.5%–2% depending on your plan. With Shopify Payments there's no extra transaction fee.

What about the monthly plan cost?

That's a fixed subscription, not a per-order fee, so it isn't in the per-item math above. To see your true per-unit cost, divide your monthly plan by the orders you expect and add it as an "other cost."
